Description
- The Ahmad Ibn Tulun Mosque is one of Cairo’s most significant historic monuments and the oldest mosque in Egypt that has survived in its original form without major alterations.
- It was commissioned by Ahmad Ibn Tulun, founder of the Tulunid dynasty, in 263 AH / 877 CE in the new city of Al-Qata’i, which he established as his capital. It became the third congregational mosque built in Islamic Egypt after the mosques of Fustat and Al-‘Askar.
- Although Amr ibn al-As Mosque predates it historically, the Ibn Tulun Mosque is the oldest mosque still standing today, with its original architecture intact.
- The mosque’s famous spiral minaret is unique in Egypt, featuring an external helical staircase reminiscent of the minaret of the Great Mosque of Samarra, making it one of the most iconic architectural features of the monument.
